Wind Quintet – Klezmer Style

This delightful piece incorporates some popular Jewish themes. It heavily features the clarinet, as it often is in Klezmer music. It is a fun work of that can be performed in about 9 minutes. The first movement sets the tone as the clarinet plays a wild line and cadenza above the drone of the other winds. This movement includes Zum Gali Gali Gali, as well as some music from Mahler’s First Symphony, as counterpoint against the clarinet solo lines. The second movement is more reverential in nature and has the famous lullaby, Eliyahu HaNavi, as its main theme. The third movement begins with an introduction featuring the clarinet. It proceeds to accelerate into a wild Hava Nagila dance that races to the end of the movement, with musicians yelling “HEY!” after the last note.
